چکیده

The U.S. Geological Survey is contributing scientific findings and synthesized results from its South Florida Ecosystem Program toward development and implementation of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. Findings derived from hydrological and ecological studies and extensive data collected to monitor and characterize the Everglades ecosystem are being integrated into the development of numerical models to guide and evaluate restoration decisions. A coupled surface-water/groundwater hydrodynamic/transport model is being developed for the coastal marine and freshwater wetland ecosystems of Everglades National Park. The multi-dimensional model is facilitating the development of estuarine ecological models by providing insight into the nature and extent of saltwater/freshwater mixing in the landmargin ecosystems that encompass the mangrove ecotone. Dynamic salinity transport simulations are being designed and generated to test the development of estuarine indicator species models for use as performance measures to evaluate the effectiveness of restoration actions. Projects contributing hydrologic process-study findings and data for development of the hydrodynamic/transport model are identified and the integration and use of the study results and data in the model are discussed in this paper.

Changes in Modern Pollen Assemblages and Soil Geochemistry along Coastal Environmental Gradients in the Everglades of South Florida

This study aims to document the changes in modern pollen assemblages and soil elemental chemistry along broad edaphic, hydrological, and salinity gradients, including a previously undocumented secondary environmental gradient, in a vast mangrove-dominated wetland region in the Everglades, South Florida. Twenty-five soil surface samples were collected along an interior wetland transect and an es...

Investigation of long-term mangrove and saltmarsh area changes in the Iranian mangrove habitats (Case study: mangroves of Hormozgan province)

In general, investigation of changes occurred in the area of mangrove and saltmarshes indicates the balance between these two ecosystems and plays an important role in providing necessary solutions to maintain their ecosystem services. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the expanse of mangroves and saltmarshes in the mangrove habitats of Hormozgan province during a l...

Land Surface Analysis of the Florida Everglades

Data collected at key points or along important environmental gradients help us understand microscale processes and advance techniques for characterizing South Florida’s land surface using imagery collected from the air or space. This project is developing rapid, non-destructive protocols for vegetation assessment (Figure 1) to create models that estimate biophysical characteristics of vegetati...
